Kids Korner

October 1, 2016

October is here! The leaves are changing, the weather outside is just about perfect, and most importantly, pumpkin pie is back in season (Side note: if you happen to make a pumpkin pie this fall, make sure to save me a piece)! If you have not noticed yet, October is my most favorite month of the year, and I look forward to it just about every day. One reason that it is my most favorite month may surprise you. In fact, you probably won’t even guess it, so let me tell you. It is Fall Festival season! That’s right, with the month of October comes the time for a Fall Festival. As a kid’s pastor, this is probably my most favorite event that we do at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church (And it’s not ONLY because I get a ton of candy either J)! With this event happening at the end of this month, I wanted to take a second and remind you of a few things in regards to ROSBC’s Annual Fall Festival.

First of all, I believe it is important to understand why we do what we do in regards to the ROSBC Fall Festival. Each year, we have a wonderful opportunity of meeting a physical need in our community when it comes time for Halloween. This, we pray, will turn into meeting the most important spiritual need, which is Salvation. Children always look forward to collecting candy every year. To me, the best time to do this the Halloween season. Furthermore, parents want to make sure their children get that candy collected. What we do at ROSBC is provide a safe and easily accessible place for families to come, collect candy, and enjoy an evening together. By doing this, we make our church known to the community, and we also show them that we care about families. Through this friendly and welcoming avenue, we can then extend an invitation to join our church body for another church function or worship service, which we pray will turn into a salvation experience. We do not fill trunks with candy, provide games for children and put time into creating an awesome photo booth simply for them and us to have an enjoyable time. We ultimately do this outreach event to make Jesus and his love known to our lost community. I believe that many people today will not see their spiritual need of a Savior until a physical need has been met. We at ROSBC have the wonderful privilege and opportunity to do just that through our annual Fall Festival.

With all of that being said, we cannot make this year’s Fall Festival happen without help. That is the second thing I want to talk about with you. That’s right, I am going to ask you to volunteer for the Fall Festival. This year, we are focusing a large amount of resources and time into the trunk or treat portion of our Fall Festival. In fact, three-fourths of this event is dedicated to just that. We need people to decorate trunks, greet visitors, park cars, assist at the photo both, and keep watch over the different sections of the Fall Festival. You and I both know that the pastoral staff is not capable of accomplishing all of these tasks (This is super clear to see by just looking at us J)! Therefore, we are asking you to volunteer. Our goal is to have 20 trunks enter the trunk or treat (which would include at least 20 people). We need at least three parking attendants and four greeters. We also need five people to assist Jonathan and Christina Hendrickson at the photo booth. And finally, I need at least two individuals to watch over the different areas of the Fall Festival. If you add all of this up, we need at least THIRTY-FOUR people (probably more) to volunteer for this event! Now, with that said, we can easily do that if you will decide right now to volunteer. These positions do not require any certain skill; they just require a willing and serving heart. And if you ask me, I believe you have that. So, next time you are on the church campus pick up a Fall Festival Volunteer Form located throughout the building. Sign up for a position, and give it to the church office or myself by October 26. You may also fill out a volunteer form on our website by clicking on the Upcoming Events tab located at the top of rosbc.org.

Lastly, let me put one more plug in for those who are considering volunteering for our trunk or treat. This year, we are having our 2nd annual Trick Yo Trunk Contest. That means if you enter a trunk into the trunk or treat you will also be entered in the Trick Yo Trunk Contest. Since we are encouraging you to be creative and decorative in preparing your trunk, we would like to also reward you. Therefore, the most decorative trunk and the most creative trunk that enters the trunk or treat will be rewarded a $25 Visa gift card. We hope that this will be a small incentive for you to really get involved this year! The judges will announce the winners at 8:00 PM that evening. Also, if you plan to decorate trunk, be sure to pick up a Trick Yo Trunk Guideline Sheet located at the Connection Center or outside the Kids Room. Please consider and pray about how you can be involved at the Fall Festival this year. As always, thank you for taking a minute and reading this article. It is a privilege to serve you and your family!
