On Saturday, September 8th, the Greater Durham, NC Moose Lodge #2045, joined by the Friendly City Civitan Club, hosted our annual appreciation luncheon for area military, both active-duty and veteran, and their families.
Hosted by Rose of Sharon Baptist Church, the luncheon welcomed over 160 quests, with 5 WW II veterans (seen below) attending.
(World War II Veterans with General Ernst: Alfred Wilson, Vernon Finch, Ralph Denson, General Ernst, Bryan Turner, and Ben Riggs)
The official luncheon festivities began at noon. After welcoming remarks from Civitan President-elect Ray Eason and Governor Norm Rose, the Color Guard from Durham County Sheriff’s Department marched in for the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the national anthem, led by Rose of Sharon’s Rev. Jonathan Hendrickson, Associate Pastor/Music Minister.
After Senior Pastor Rev. Jeff McCarthy said grace, a veritable feast followed - fried and baked chicken, BBQ, spaghetti, Brunswick stew, macaroni & cheese, various vegetable dishes/casseroles, tossed and fruit salads, topped off by desserts galore – cake, cookies, pies and ice cream and sundaes dished out by servers.
Following the meal, our guest speaker this year was Major General James C. Ernst, Deputy Adjutant General for the NC National Guard. In this capacity, he is responsible for the overall readiness of the Army & Air Forces and leads more than 11,000 soldiers and airmen within the NC National Guard. A combat veteran, Major General Ernst has served state & nation for more than 30 years. His most recent assignments include Commander, 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade and Chief of Staff-Army, Joint Force Headquarters, NCNG.
There are so many folks to recognize for their hours of service to make this event a success. Our special gratitude goes out to all the Rose of Sharon members who helped us in setting up, registering, directing traffic, serving, and cleaning up afterwards.
Front row, L-R: Lisa Williamson, Lela McCarson, Janet Broyhill, Mary Webster. Back row: Brenda Meier, Kristy Carter, Pat Poole, Owen Anderson, Chet Wetherington, Rev. Jeff McCarthy, Doug Broyhill
A special thanks goes to Becky High-Shipp and Carolyn Taylor, who "orchestrated" the church crew. (Picture not included)
And let us not forget those who braved the hot weather to direct traffic: Bill Lascallette and Mike Meier, (both of whom are veterans),
Terry Cagle and Frank Shipp.
All certainly exhibited Christ's servant spirit.
Thank you Rose of Sharon Baptist Church!
The Moose Lodge looks forward to future events to support and honor our military. What a privilege it is to serve those who served/serve our nation so faithfully!
Until the next appreciation luncheon - September 7, 2019 …
