I Will Heal Their Land

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves,

and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then

I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

II. Chronicles 7:14 NKJV

When Vice President Mike Pence, the leader of the Coronavirus Task Force, gives his daily briefing, he always ends it with a short statement of faith. He says God will heal our land. Pence, a strong Evangelical Christian, is actually quoting part of a verse of scripture when he does this. That verse of scripture is found in II Chronicles 7:14.

The context for the verse is that King Solomon had just dedicated the completed temple and consecrated the altar with a sacrifice. Afterwards, the Lord appeared to Solomon at night and tells him that He has accepted the temple as a house of sacrifice. Then the Lord gives Solomon several conditions regarding the temple, the people, and his role as king.

Verse 13 gives the first conditional statement leading up to verse 14. It reads: “When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people.” God was telling Solomon if or when this happens, then do what verse 14 tells you to do.

Verse 14 has been preached by evangelists, it is quoted by prayer warriors, and has been the theme of many Christian conferences. It’s a rallying cry for revival and spiritual awakening. Mike Pence is pointing the church to this verse when he makes that comment. This verse is a key verse as a response to any disaster.

Before, during, and after Covid-19 this verse is still applicable to us. Notice it is addressed to “My people”. It’s not the world, not the lost, not the government, but it is My people, the church. The disaster hits everyone and it is widespread, but it’s the church who responds spiritually.

The rest of the verse gives us the remedy: we “humble” ourselves, we “pray”, we “seek (His) face”, we “turn from (our) wicked ways”. That’s what we are to do. As a result, the promise is that God will “hear”, “forgive (our ) sin, and “heal (our) land.”

Will you join me and thousands of other believers and do what God told Solomon to do and follow the instructions in this verse? Like Mike Pence, I believe if we do, God will indeed, heal our land.

I love and it’s a privilege to be your pastor.

Jeff
