To Share Christ and Disciple Someone

“So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.” Acts 18:26 NKJV

As we continue to move forward in the “Who’s Your One” challenge for every SBC member to identify, pray for, and share the gospel with at least one person this year, it’s important to remember we are not alone. Hundreds of churches and thousands of everyday Christians have taken this challenge. It’s also important to know that, even though the challenge is geared towards individuals, you can partner with someone else to help reach your “One”.

A good model for this is found in Acts 18 with a married couple named Aquila and Priscilla. They had a tent making business in Corinth and hired Paul to work for them while he was on his second missionary journey. He not only worked for them, but stayed with them as well. Their home and business became a base for reaching people and making disciples.

After spending a year and a half with Paul in Corinth, the couple relocates to Ephesus with Paul. Paul leaves Ephesus, but the couple remains. Everything they learned from Paul, they continued in Ephesus. Even though Aquila and Priscilla were everyday believers, they were committed to the gospel. They used their business and their home to advance the gospel.

A good example of this is found near the end of Acts 18. A young man named Apollos comes to Ephesus and preaches in the synagogue. The only problem with his message, according to verse 25 was that “he knew only the baptism of John.” After hearing him speak, Aquila and Priscilla decide to disciple him. Apollos is their “One.”

Verse 26 gives us a model for couples who want to be used by the Lord to disciple other people. The NKJV states: “they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.” This is a concise statement about it means to share Christ and disciple someone. This is a good model and pattern to follow for any person or couple that wants to reach people.

You could call this the Aquila and Priscilla method. First, “they took him aside” so that they could be more private with no distractions. The NIV says: “they invited him to their home.” Second, they “explained to Him the way of God”. And finally, explained it to him “more accurately”. The Message translation says they “told him the rest of the story.”

Apollos was open to their teaching and went on to become a great evangelist, all because a couple was willing to be used by God to disciple a new believer.

It is my prayer that you and I will approach this “Who’s Your One” challenge in the same way Aquila and Priscilla was willing to be used by God. As individuals and couples in the church, we have the same opportunity to help disciple young men and women who come our way. The question is, will we follow their example?

I love you and it’s a privilege to be your pastor.

Jeff
